This information is useful:
- Cars can be delivered and returned anywhere in San Jose metropolitan area or at the airport at no extra cost.
- If you want to pick up a car or return it where there is no car rental office extra charges apply according to the distance to San Jose or nearest office available.
- Driving in Costa Rica is not difficult, but it is important to always drive defensively.
- In Costa Rica, police officers write tickets which can be paid at any national (public-state owned) bank. If you keep the ticket, you can pay at the car rental office. Police officers do not take money and bribing is a major fault in Costa Rica.
- Costa Rican roads are not in excellent conditions. There are potholes everywhere, so be careful when driving, especially at night or in the rain.
- Highways, roads, streets and avenues are numbered on maps, but locals do no know those numbers. People are guided by landmarks. The most useful thing to do before starting a trip is to memorize the names of the towns between departure and arrival locations.
- We recommend a 4×4 over a standard car due to road conditions. Also, there are destinations, such as Monteverde, the active side of Arenal Volcano and some beaches, where a 4×4 is needed and where a small car could be damaged by road or ground characteristics. As a general rule though, standard cars can reach any location in Costa Rica
- Stop signs in Costa Rica mean slow down or keep driving for the locals so be careful and watchful at all crossroads.
- Parking in the streets is not safe time of the day. The parking lot of your hotel should be safe, but, in any case, do not leave any items inside a parked car.
- Gas is available almost anywhere. Credit cars are accepted when paying for gas or services at the gas station. MasterCard and Visa Cards are widely accepted, but American Express and others are not.
- The person who signs the contract should be the owner of the credit card supporting the final payment and also the main driver. Second driver, if included in the contract, may be required to pay an extra fee depending on the car rental company, please ask about this possible charge.
- One day of rent is equal to 24 hours, but 27 hours is equal to 2 days and soon. Most car rental companies in Costa Rica allow clients to be a maximum of 2 hours late when returning a car. Please ask about this advantage.
- Weekly rental is cheaper. The amount is equal to 6 days of rent + mandatory insurance and the 7th day is ¨0¨ rent + mandatory insurance.
